Kenya: Habitat Heights development launched

Press Release: 09.12.19

The Habitat Heights housing development in Kenya was officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, at a large-scale event in which UNOPS and Sustainable Housing Solutions (SHS) were proud to participate in.  The development by Afra Holdings will see over 8,000 homes built using Baupanel, our proprietary construction technology.

At the event the President unveiled the country’s roadmap for the development of a further 100,000 units through joint efforts between the government, UNOPS and SHS.  A development framework agreement was also signed between SHS and Kenya’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, along with the issuance of strategic partner certificates.

In his speech, President Kenyatta said: “This is a happy moment for me. I say so because for the past one and a half years, we have been working diligently to formulate an implementation plan to usher Kenya into an era of affordable and decent housing and, indeed, I see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Show homes for two and three-bedroom apartments have been constructed at Habitat Heights, with decor by Bau Lifestyle.  As the exclusive interior design partner of SHS, Bau Lifestyle provide local lifestyle design through a global approach, which translates to value-for-money customised solutions.

Chief designer Julie Cowland said: “The key brief for Bau Lifestyle on the Habitat Heights project was affordable homes, everyday living for family life. We provide furniture packages with a high standard of comfort, quality and design in mind.  Homeowners benefit from a complete turn-key solution and because of our buying-power we can offer packages to suit any budget.”

Baupanel uses unique structural panels that are earthquake, hurricane and fire resistant with thermo-acoustic insulation. Baupanel constructions achieve the highest energy rating [class A] at an affordable price. This is due to its enormous thermal insulation, which is an added value for both developers, and end users that will appreciate the reduction of their energy consumption bills.  The robust nature of the system, combined with the speed at which it can be deployed, makes Baupanel the perfect solution to deliver sustainable accommodation at speed anywhere in the world.

The completed Habitat Heights development will comprise 972 one-bedroom units, 2,912 two-bedroom units, 4,368 three-bedroom units, 60 retail shop units and other community amenities.

ENDS.

About Baupanel
Baupanel Systems enables SHS to build sustainable, safe structures at speed and scale. The technology means we can complete construction at a considerably faster rate than any other developer.  Baupanel has (as its main component) expanded polystyrene (EPS), an efficient, effective thermal insulation that is a biologically inert, non-toxic and stable material.  EPS plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, making a very positive contribution to the reduction of global warming as it is 100% recyclable, with virtually no waste produced.
